After almost three years of battling serious health issues, my father died peacefully at home at the age of 79 on Sunday, December 27th, 2020 (the Feast of the Holy Family).
In the Second Reading I chose at my father’s funeral on Thursday December 31st, we heard from St. Paul (1 Corinthians: 1:26) “Consider your own calling, brothers and sisters.”
Again, we hear ‘the call’. Often as Catholics, when we talk about ‘the call’ or ‘vocations’, we think of priests and religious, but that’s only half the story. Every Christian is called to be another Christ. Remember what St. Athanasius used to say, “God became man so that man could become God.” And God chose my dad, who by human standards was not wise, powerful, or of noble birth. What did God want from my dad? To live in him. To Incarnate himself in him. To present Jesus to the world through the person of Edward A. Sousa. Thank you Dad (and best friend) for passing on the love, mercy and forgiveness of Christ Jesus to your priest son. I love you for all eternity.
A special thank you to the parishioners of my home parish of St. Anthony's Church in West Warwick, Fr. Victor Silva (pastor) Deacon Alex Marchetti, Bishop Robert Evans, St. Anthony's Choir, and the Honor Guard from the West Warwick Police Department for their assistance and support at my father's funeral Mass.
Fr. Edward A. Sousa, Jr.
